Sometimes, summer flings do work out. I’m proof.
Yesterday, August 27, 2009, was my three year anniversary. That’s right – it’s been three years since the first time my boyfriend, let’s call him GSXR (pronounced jixer) after his motorcycle, finally asked me to be his girlfriend. (I can just hear the sarcasm: “Aww, how cute.)

A Sweet Kiss Before A Loving Relationship
Well, I’ve always wanted to write a little something about how the two of us met, and I figured now would be a great time.
I was almost 18 at a friend’s birthday party. That means a bunch of teens were getting smashed and going crazy, since they were all on the brink of “adulthood”. Needless to say, so was I. So I was sitting there, minding my own business, laughing with this cute guy I just met (let’s name him Stubs, for his short fingers), when I saw…him.
How corny is that?
All I remember through the alcohol was that I couldn’t speak. For the first time in all my wild party days, I met a guy who made me speechless at first sight. He has super wide shoulders, spiky dirty blond hair, and eyes a brighter blue than I thought possible. (Yummy!!!)

Fun Times During a Summer Fling
When I gained control of myself about ten minutes later, I went and introduced myself. His smile said he was into me, and I was stoked. We flirted all night and I found out Stubs was his cousin. When it came time for my DD to take me home, we found out that shockingly I had not just one flat tire…but two!
Stubs and GSXR followed us home, where GSXR or I made the move and kissed (I think we both went for it). For the next couple weeks, I was floating on Cloud Nine. Stubs began to date my DD, and his other cousin dated my best friend. It was great. We spent a summer partying, lounging by the pool, and basking in the warmth of a summer fling.
Of course, drama happened. Our friends’ relationships fell apart around us, and we felt the tension in our own. We both agreed to keep things unemotional, so we tried seeing other people… obviously, that did not work. We both ended up hurt and upset and led to one of those scenes you only read about in romance novels. (I couldn’t talk and tried to walk away; he did that hand sliding down the arm to my hand thing as I turned. Our eyes met, held…and he poured a bottle of water over my head. Needless to say, I reciprocated, and we ended up laughing and kissing.)
A week later it was “official.” It took us from April 4 until August 27 to figure out that we cared about each other. We moved incredibly fast and lived together within six months and, although we do get in those grit-your-teeth-till-you-have-a-migraine fights, it’s very obvious we still love each other very much.

A Kiss 3 Years Later
We really didn’t do anything special for our anniversary; we spent the day together and saw a movie. But that doesn’t matter at all to me.
As I’m writing this, I realized that I broke all the traditional roles for women. You’re told not to make the first move (I introduced myself to him), kiss on the first date (heck, it wasn’t even a date), or agree to dating a guy with a “no commitment” agreement. But it worked. Perfectly. I guess modern times call for modern measures, rather than sitting at home waiting for him to call. If you want something, go for it!
Don’t be afraid to put the moves on a guy. And, I decided after I met GSXR, that you do know when you meet someone special. You’ll feel it in the pit of your stomach – or, as such in my case, the fact you can’t talk (stammering, stuttering, slurring, and/or speechlessness).
Good luck, girls (although you probably don’t need it).
