Do It Yourself: Brazilian Blowout

The Brazilian Blowout isn’t what we’ve always thought when we’ve heard “Brazilian” during beauty hour. In short, it’s a straightening method for hair. Here’s how it works:
The formula applied is a Keratin treatment. It coats the hair follicle and, when heat is introduced, it straightens the structure of the hair itself. After it is done, when you blow dry your hair, you’ll notice a huge difference in the straightness of your hair; if air-dried, you’ll see a new shine and sheen to your hair, showing off the health boost it received from the treatment. The effects last amount 3 months but, the more often you do the treatment, the stronger the effects are and longer they last.
I personally have wavy-straight hair, but it’s very long (lower back). Straightening it every day took a little bit of time I didn’t want to spend on it, but I prefer it straight. Solution: Brazilian Blowout.
My first attempt at a Brazilian Blowout was a home-kit. The effects were mid-range (mostly straight) and lasted about 50 days, compared to the 90 day professional job. However, I saved about $200 by doing it myself.
Professional Brazilian Blowout treatments can range from $150-300, depending on where you go. The hair dresser uses the best formula, and it takes about 2 hours for the whole process. It starts with a wash, where they use one shampoo, followed by a coating on treatment; then the long process of blow-drying and straightening begins. The straight-iron needs to pass each piece of hair ten times; that’s right; ten.
Afterwards, a professional will wash your hair, and then do whatever else you paid for. From there on out, it doesn’t matter how you handle your hair (as long as you use a non-sulfate shampoo).
For a home-kit, you can’t wash your hair for three days after the treatment. Your hair feels gross for those three days with all that hair product, but you’ll notice the straight difference.
But you can do a Brazilian Blowout at home. There are several kits available online, and here are the best At Home Brazilian Blowout kits we’ve found, in a variety of price ranges. Each one has its own list of instructions, but make sure you have a straight-iron that will go above 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
By the way, the process will make your eyes water. The heating process releases fumes into the air that smell quite strong.
