If the veins in your arms look green under your skin and your face looks great next to an orange scarf, you have warm skin tones. Before you dye your hair, there are a lot of things to consider before you make the big step.

If you have natural golden blonde hair, dark brown hair with gold/red highlights, or are red/strawberry blonde like me; if your natural skin color has gold/pink/peach undertones, freckles, or redness; and your eye color is either golden brown, green, blue, hazel, then here are the tips for you:

Look for hair color boxes with the words honey, sun, beige, or gold, to richen and highlight your features – stay away from boxes with the word ASH in it (no ash!). Rich golden browns, golden blonde, and auburn are beautiful for warm skin tones. If you’re looking for highlights, go for a warm gold or red. Also, avoid colors like white, jet black, blue and violet: they will just wash out your features.

If I didn’t mention you already, listen up. Hazel, dark brown, and black eyes can use darker shades of color, such as black, medium to dark browns, or golden browns. As a highlight, you can use dark reds, such as wine and auburn for a nice variety and depth.

Eyes that are hazel, blue, or green with medium blonde to light brown hair should just add golden or lighter highlights rather than dying the whole head. (To achieve highlights without a salon, have a friend use foil to separate the pieces from the rest: use a brush to coat, and then wrap foil around the chunk of hair to set appropriate time.) If you really do want to dye your hair, do NOT go beyond a warm medium brunette.
If your hair is light blonde, use a light brunette to highlight or a soft natural red.

Enjoy your new look!
