This seven products are necessary for a complete kit, but even this categories are broken into sub-disciplines (liquid vs powder foundation and the like).
For cosmetics, you need to have an understanding of your skin tone and texture, and what products work best with what you have. For example: if you have oily skin, find an acne-fighting liquid or mineral powder 
foundation; these will absorb or diminish that oily sheen. Then, depending on your eyeshape, the type of eyeliner and eyeshadow are various; eye-color, even, plays into the color choices for these items.
