Every girl should know how to do a cute half-up do. It’s the best of both worlds: a touch of class or romance with the “up” and the sexiness of a down hairstyle. When done properly, it’s elegant or adorable, depending on how you amp it up.

The key to a half-up hair style is some volume. Invest in a tease comb or a “Bump It” to get the crown of your hair a little more perky; the “half-up” part frames the bump to create overall volume to frame your lovely face.

The best half-up hair styles have the down-part curled or waved (here’s our How to: Loose, Sexy Waves). It’s the “romantic” touch.

Okay, down to the fun part: How to Do the Half-Up

You’ll want to grab the pieces framing the bump, before gathering the actual bump hair; this way the bump will stay smooth.

Using bobby pins, secure the strands in place. You can add a barrette or other accessory to flash up the pins as well. Some girls like to add in a little hair clip to push the strands back up for a “palm tree” type effect–just experiment and have fun!

But, really, that’s all you need to do! Experiment with different amounts of hair up (starting at your ears, to just a little “bump”, or to the majority of your hair) to create new looks.

It looks great for work, dances, dates, whatever! Add some earrings for more class as well.
