Are Detox Diets Healthy?
Detox diets are very popular among celebrities looking to slim down quickly before a big premiere or a new role—but are detox diets a good way to loose weight. And more importantly, are they healthy? Detox diets claim to purify the body and remove toxins. They are based on the idea that the food you eat every day leave behind harmful toxins in your body.
When you are on a detox diet, you will give up foods that contain toxins, like caffeine, dairy products, sugar, meats, and some grains. Typically the start with a period of fasting followed by the consumption of raw fruits and vegetables, fruit juices, and water. Some detox diets also have something that claims to cleanse your colon and liver. However, this type of diet might not be healthy.
There is no scientific evidence that proves that it is necessary to purify the body because your body does it naturally. If you really want to purify your system and become regular, eat more fiber! A detox diet is not a good way to loose weight. When you are on such a diet, you will loose a few pounds, but once you stop the diet and start eating normally, you will gain all the weight back. A normal, safe, amount of weight to loose is about 1 to 2 pounds per week. So you should be skeptical of any diet that claims you will loose any more then that in a week. It could be risky. And even if you do loose the weight, as soon as you stop the diet, you will gain all that weight back.
If detox isn’t right—what is?
A healthy diet is all about the right balance—healthy food and exercise. Eating lean protein, unsaturated fats, fruits and vegetables is important—as is getting the right amount of exercise (about 3-4 times a week for about 40-60 minutes of intense exercise).
It is always important that whenever you start a new diet to consult your doctor first.
