2009 Hairstyles For Your Face Shape

Every girl needs to take into consideration their face shape when they style their hair a different way. Otherwise, it will look…odd. A short cut on a round face would make a girl appear chubbier – or too long hair on a rectangular hair will look longer. So flatter yourself with the best hair cut for your face shape.

First, you need to decide what face shape you have. There are six total: Oval, Rectangle, Round, Square, Heart, and Triangle.

You need to be non-biased when attempting this, unless you want to just go to your hair stylist. But here’s a sure-fire way to realizing your face shape:

This is actually a scientific way. You need a tape measure or ruler, and measure across your face at the top of your cheekbones. Next, measure across the widest part of your jaw line. Then measure across the widest parts of your forehead – usually midway between eyebrows and hairline. Last, measure from the tip of your hairline to the tip of your chin.

Now, with these numbers, read each description and do the math.

Diamond Faces – These are the widest at the cheekbones with nearly equal forhead and jawline widths.
Square – Almost equal in length and width, by cheekbone width.
Heart – Wide at cheekbones and/or forehead, narrow at the jawline.
Oblong/Rectangle – Longer than it is wide.
Round – Nearly as wide as it is long, by forehead width.
Oval – The length of your face is about 1.5 times the width.

Ok, so now you’ve got your face shape. Scroll down and find yours!

Widest at the cheekbones, but narrow at the forehead and jawline, this face shape is a cross between heart and oval.

Because your face shape is so dramatic yet balanced, you can use a variety of hairstyles. Mess around with anything you want, but try to keep your hair off your face in order to show your beautiful features.

Triangle
Heart shaped, reverse, with a narrow cheekbones and temples but a very dominant jaw.

Short hair works wonders with this face shape. It will help soften the prominent jawline to give you a more graceful appearance. Try styles with full temples that taper at the jaw, with off center parts, wedges, or shags. Layers also help to balance out the fullness of your face, so try wearing a few layers at your cheekbones to soften your overall look. Your eyes will pop out of your face! You’ll end up looking striking, unique from every other bone structure – you got it, so flaunt it.

Avoid:
Long hair styles – they draw too much attention to your jaw area. Center parts are way too blunt, so avoid that at all costs. If you have too much weight at the crown or too much hair hitting your jawline, you won’t get the desired soft appearance and will end up looking a little too…masculine.

Heart
Wide at the temples and hairline, but narrowed at the chin, equals a beautiful heart-shaped face.

Heart shaped faces are versatile. They look good with chin length hair and even long styles. To spicen things up, try a side-part with swept forward layers around the upper face, possibly with wispy bangs. If you want daring, go with a chin length bob which will create a balanced look by adding fullness to your jawline.

Avoid:
Any hairstyles that bring attention to your cheekbones. You want fullness in the jawline, otherwise you will look a little lopsided. If you have too much height at your crown, you’ll look top heavy as well. Slicked back locks are way too harsh for you, as well as short full styles with tapered necklines.

Square
A square jawline with an equally square hairline.

This face shape can pull off short-to-medium hair. Try to use layers around the face for more roundness and wispu bangs to soften the angular face. The shape is more beautiful with off-center parts. It also looks great with soft waves, like body waves, to add more balance.

Avoid:
Straight bangs, long straight hair, or center parts. Straight bobs should be avoid unless they are layered if it ends above or below the jaw, not even with it- pump up the crown and round out the sides and it will look nice.

Round
With the widest points as the cheeks and ears, a full-looking round face has a round chin and round hairline.

Try hairstyles with fullness around and at the crown. Off center parts work wonderfully. You can try short hair styles if their swept back, or ones that are longer than chin-length. You can layer the top to achieve more fullness, which will make your face more narrow.

Rectangle/Oblong
This face is long and slender, with equal width at forehead and just below cheekbones. The chin may be narrow or the forehead may be high.

Try styles with short to medium hair length. I have this, and I have layers around between cheeks and jaw to add fullness, plus have side-swept bangs – wispy ones work as well. These tricks add width to your face. If you cut your hair towards a more medium to short length, the cut will shorten the length. This look is great with any parts, side, center, or slicked back.

Avoid:
Too long of hair, because it adds length to your face. Too much height does the same thing.

Oval
A gently rounded hairline with a more narrow jawline than temple line.

You can wear any hair style, really. Long, short, medium – it all suits you fine! Many models have this hair, so it should be really easy for you to find a hairstyle that fits your personality.

Just avoid things that cover up your features, such as too heavy bangs or too forward styles. Lucky you.
